Day 26: Obedience To God's Word

“The Law of the Lord is perfect; it gives us new life. His teachings last forever, and they give wisdom to ordinary people.”

Psalm 19:7 CEV

Roadmaps are handy. Global Positioning Systems are even more incredible. Both, however, pale in comparison to the amazing spiritual roadmap-GPS available through God’s Word.

The more we devote ourselves to God’s Word, the more we open ourselves up to the greatest wisdom in the universe. The wiser we become, the more we realize that God requires obedience to His instructions.

The Hebrew meaning of wisdom includes separating yourself to God, opening your life to Him, and allowing Him to reveal His roadmap to you. Throughout the Scriptures, wisdom and obedience are tied together. Moses, for example, taught us that wisdom consists in knowing and doing the commandments of God.

“See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the Lord my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”

Deuteronomy 4:5-6 NIV

Essentially, Christ Jesus said the same thing in Matthew 7:24: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (NIV).

Godly wisdom means hearing and doing God’s Word. People who obey Him and humble themselves to Him understand the fact that the fear of the Lord is the beginning, wellspring, and unending source of all true wisdom.

If you want God to work on your behalf, the first step is total obedience to His Word. People often quote John 8:32: “...You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The verse before it is seldom quoted: “…Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.’” (NIV)
